A fun book

I bought Gradshteyn & Ryzhik because I had to write an answer to some homework problem in some physics class that I took. The problem had contorted itself into a perverse elliptic integral and its recovery was beyond my means, so I went to the bookstore, looked for something fat and Soviet, and found this gem. I forked over the cash for it, figuring that it was a long-term investment.
I took it home and dutifully plagiarized some of its lines to satisfy my physics professor. For the next few months, that was the mode in which I used this book: read physics problem, translate into elliptic or hypergeometric beast, look up answer in G&R, cover up my tracks, get 9 or 10 points on the problem. Occasionally, I would own up to having looked something up.
The book served its purpose well. Subsequently, I studied some integrals of the spinning top that were more or less right out of Nikiforov's book on special functions (another excellent source for those of you that would like to "earn" a PhD), and G&R stood well by its side. Indeed, I discovered how much fun it was to look up an integral whose complicated solution had been derived elsewhere, and then to look for patterns by analyzing the immediate neighbors of the given integral on the preceding and subsequent lines in G&R.
After I was done with answering questions from physics professors, the book sat on the shelf taking up more room than several of its neighbors put together. Nonetheless, its binding was good, its typesetting clear, and its terse and copious stream of forbidding integral forms was pleasing to the eye.
Some time passed, and one day I asked myself just what would motivate anybody to write such a large collection, so I started rummaging through its pages looking for a pattern. I realized that its organization was excellent (which would explain why I was able to find the answers for my homework), and I also found some sections that were just plain fun. The very beginning lists some sums of infinite series that can be derived during lunch or while waiting for a friend at a cafe (e.g. sum of k^3 = [1/2(n)(n+1)]^2 ). Then one can read about numbers and functions named after Euler, Jacobi, Bernoulli, Catalan... each line, more or less, is cross-referenced, so after you have given up trying to derive that darned product representation of the gamma function, you can go to the book in the library and see how Whittaker did it.
After about 15 years of owning this book, I am nowhere near done with it. If you like math, and you want insurance against being bored, this book just might do the trick. As a bonus, it puts cute matrix stuff in the back (e.g. the "circulant") which one can read when desiring a break from the integrals. I know the book seems expensive, but think of if as spending about two bucks a year on it.
I see that one can now obtain a CDRom version of G&R. An intriguing option, specially because it outputs in TeX; but really, how can anyone resist the large, stubby charm of its paper version?
G&R can help you to deal with members of the opposite sex. I once used it to scare away a girlfriend that was becoming much too annoying, by pretending to be thickly engrossed in the process of memorizing every single integral in the "special functions" chapters. As for my mother, she was particularly proud of me when I showed her that I could actually understand "randomly selected" pages from this book (I don't suppose that I am giving anything away by remarking that books open naturally on sections that have been previously examined).
For those of you that are concerned about home security, G&R is also a weapon. Some people surround themselves with baseball bats or, if they are particularly reckless, a handgun or two... I prefer to keep a fully-loaded G&R by my pillow, which I can hurl at any prowler at a moment's notice. Its shape is surprisingly well adjusted to the hand for the purposes of hurling, and if the covers are bound by a rubber band, the book maintains its shape quite stably as it sails across the room. Sell your Smith & Wesson and buy yourself a Gradshteyn & Ryzhik. You won't regret it.

Daunting at first but worth it.

Before it was much use, I had to read the section as to how the book is organized. As the other reviewers state the integrals are comprehensive and as far as I have used correct. The integrals are very useful, but this book includes many other features that I have found helpful as a graduate student. The sections on Hermite and Legendre polynomials are especially helpful for students of Electricity and Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, and Mathematical physics (you won't have to hunt in several books to find what you need). The included identities for hyperbolic and trig functions are very helpful simplifying homework answers, mostly because of their comprehensive nature. This book is great because it seems to have everything and most people will not need to buy another table. The binding is good also, so it should last many years with normal care. This is a very good investment.

Let's keep this short and sweet. The book is probably THE best in what it claims to be, i.e. a compendium of mainly integrals, but all sorts of interesting stuff also manages to find its way in. Why some former reviewers exhaust their artillery in complaining about the CD is beyond me. This is a reference BOOK an as such unsurpassed. Buy it for sheer pleasure if for nothing else. While you're at it, you might want to take a look at Handbook of Mathematics by I. N. Bronshtein et al. which I ordered from Amazon in Germany a moment ago. That one also comes with a CD and I'm getting curious about how it will turn out to be. But Gradshteyn and Ryzhik - the BOOK - are a must.

A discrete dynamical system can be characterized as an iterated function. Given the efficiency with which computers can do iteration, it is now possible for anyone with access to a personal computer to generate beautiful images whose roots lie in discrete dynamical systems. Images of Mandelbrot and Julia sets abound in publications both mathematical and not. The mathematics behind the pictures is beautiful in its own right and is the subject of this text. The level of presentation is suitable for advanced undergraduates who have completed a year of college-level calculus. Concepts from calculus are reviewed as necessary. Mathematica programs that illustrate the dynamics and that will aid the student in doing the exercises are included in the Appendix. In this second edition, the topics covered are rearranged to make the text more flexible. In particular, the material on symbolic dynamics is now optional, and the book can easily be used for a single-semester course dealing exclusively with functions of a single real variable. Amazing motivational introduction

An excellent short motivational reading / introductory course material. Starts ground up and uses very simple hands-on examples to demonstrate the fascinating behavior of non-linear dynamic systems (chaos, fractals, etc). Covers most of the basic methodology.
The book also has a lot of excellent exercises for reinforcing the material, for different difficulty levels.

This is an excellent book for teaching for mathematics students. Besides the standard material it contains a chapter about some numerical methods as dynamical systems. I strongly propose that a third updated edition is made.

For nearly seven years, I worked as a lab technician at the Toms River Chemical Corporation. I remember the initial economic benefit the dye-and-plastics manufacturing plant brought to the community and its philanthropic projects designed to ingratiate it with the population. I remember endorsing the company's effluent pipeline and its alleged efforts to be a good neighbor. That was then. Before the knowledge became public that the plant's Swiss masters were following a time-dishonored tradition: from originally polluting the Rhine River, next to polluting the Ohio River, and finally to polluting the Toms River. Before we knew that waste organics were being secretly dumped onto the sandy soil, where they leached into the groundwater, polluting not only individual wells but the township wells too. Before the onset of the cancer cluster that claimed the lives of many children whose mothers' only sin seemed to be unknowingly drinking tainted water during pregnancy. This book delves deeply into the history of the dye industry and the lessons it brought to Toms River--unfortunately, after the fact. The thorough documentation, in the form of endnotes, often provides sidebars that are fascinating in themselves. This is not a book you'll read in one sitting. The science is detailed and sometimes overwhelms. The anguish of the families is palpable. And the political posturing and deception displayed by the players can stimulate outrage. As well they should.

Excellently written and well balanced

When I received this book I was not in the mood to read about chemical companies' complete disregard for anything but profits or pollution or cancer. However, it immediately drew me in and I read 134 pages in the first sitting. I've also been compelled to tell everyone I'm in contact with about it.

Fagin's writing and structuring is particularly effective in keeping the book lively and interesting and preventing it from becoming overwhelming. He shifts between the specific history of Toms River, of the plant, its employees, and the citizens, and the history of industrial waste disposal, environmental safeguards, and the history of epidemiology, cancer, cancer treatments and research. The background feeds directly into the issues in Toms River, and each section seemed necessary.

While I find science interesting, it's certainly not my specialist subject, but I didn't feel overwhelmed by the information presented. Fagin writes very clearly, and seems to keep the general audience in mind. For instance, if an acronym hasn't been used for a while he reminds you what it stands for (a move I greatly appreciate). There is a real balance in this book, both in the information reported (epidemiology is rarely completely obvious and solid) and between telling the scientific story and the human story.

I highly recommend this book, and really can't find anything to criticize.

Not Snookie's Jersey shore: three generations of chemistry, greed and environmental politics...

When I was in high school, my family lived less than 10 miles from the New Jersey title city of this book. In those days, the landscape of that part of Ocean County was not yet populated with the McMansions of New York and Philadelphia commuters. In addition to the stunted pines and pin oaks that mark the Pine Barrens, the area was dominated by the remnants of closed post-WWII poultry farms, some cranberry bogs, gravel pits and horse farms...and not much else. When we roamed the mostly unfenced woodlands between roads often named for mills and creeks, it was not unusual to come across 55-gallon drums whose unknown contents either still oozed or had solidified into unnatural blobs of brightly colored who-knows-what. We gave these a wide berth as we pressed on with the business of being kids. Even though we kidded openly about south Jersey attracting the remains of organized criminals gone wrong, we had little idea what other maliciousness hid behind the many stands of trees and unmarked dirt roads...

In "Toms River", Dan Fagin weaves together the intricate threads of economics, science, politics and personal tragedy in this examination of how both a chemical giant (Ciba-Geigy) and entrepreneurs in industrial waste disposal contaminated the ground water (and to a lesser degree, the air) of a sleepy coastal town. He takes on complex issues to address the history of industrial processes (and the disposal of their by-products), both in Europe and in the United States. He adds narratives on the economics of rural America, the indifference of elected and appointed government officials, the science of environmental medicine, and the dynamics of popular fights against more well financed adversaries when the extent of the human and environmental tolls are realized.

Don't expect a quick read, because the issues are complex and Fagin addresses the science in the detail needed to understand the problems. While I may have grown up in the midst of the events in this book, I had left the area and was living overseas when the popular push back against the perpetrators in this book took place. Until reading "Toms River", I was unaware that Toms River was once a battleground for a very public demonstration by Greenpeace. Fagin describes these events and effectively brings a needed human element into a subject matter that could be easily run over by the scientific and political discussions that accompany it.

Whether you're from New Jersey or not, this book is an outstanding treatment of a tragic American story. Well worth the time!

Great book!

This book is full of incredible information about attracting the type of customers you want for your business. I was a bit skeptical at first because I have been taught for years that in order to grow your business you have to sell, sell, sell, and you have to compete with everybody else, and use all kinds of in-your-face tactics that I never really enjoyed, but this book works. Within 1 week after reading this book I signed up 2 new perfect clients - the kind of clients I had been wanting but never getting. I would highly recommend that you put any skepticism aside and read this book.

For those who like modern/minimalist decor

I bought this book because of a review in a shelter magazine. What they failed to mention is that the photos feature modern and even minimalist decor. What about ideas for those of us who'd like to live in something a bit more cozy than a black and white interior with lots of boxes piled up for storage??? So if you're like me and looking for solutions for more traditional decor, this book may not be for you. There're ideas here, but folks like us have to do the work to figure out how to adapt them to our lifestyle.

OK, but nothing I couldn't have found on google in 10 minutes.

It's a nice enough looking book for a coffee table or shelf, but the contents are already dated and not very unique. I bought it as part of a housewarming gift for a friend; she glanced at it for about 30 seconds and then set it down and I doubt she picked it up again. It can't compete with a quick internet search for finding interesting ideas on small space design.

don't go into the subject test without this!

Following McMullen's plan of attack, I went through his must-read list name by name, a little every day (o.k., every other day), working my way through the Norton Anthologies and the new Oxford Companion to English Literature which has synopses of plays and novels -- often on the test all you need to know is the name of some of the characters and the author to clinch the question. I spent over $150 in books, but they'll come in handy once I'm in grad school anyway. I haven't received my score yet but I know I could have done better only if I'd given myself more time and had a better memory -- through no fault of the book. Also helpful was the book of tests published by ETS -- they really prepare you. As another reviewer mentioned, the test contains more 20th c., African-American and new theory questions (phenomenological criticism?) than the guide warns but that's the only criticism. Good luck!

Great Guide -- Use the Masterplots series too.

The "Cracking" series are valuable for whatever test you are taking. I've used this one and the GRE Cat, and they work without wasting your time like so many others.
May I offer you all a suggestion? I came across the Magill series on Literature (usually found in reference sections of the library) and found them invaluable for getting a concise, well-written synopsis on the novels, poetry, drama etc. that will be covered on the test. I zeroed in on the suggested reading list offered by the "Cracking" book, studied for about 4 weeks, and got a 96% on the test. Good, not great

This book definitely helps take away some test anxiety by explaining that it is ok to be overwhelmed by how difficult the test is. It gives great studying tips and explanations for the exam.

I must confess that I admire that this book admits that it cannot cover everything; however, it left out a major components that were on my exam. I took the exam in April '07 and was slammed in the face with post-modern and even contemporary literature from around the globe. Tough questions, not the basics that we all should know by now. Also, the criticism questions dealt with things not even mentioned in the book. I'm talking like 20% of the test being on things I never anticipated. So much for getting rid of test anxiety.

To be fair, I have yet to find any kind of study help for this growing section of the exam. Just be advised that this book skipped it completely. So you'd better find it elsewhere.
