On the money about getting their money

Some months ago I bought a book called Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping--Updated and Revised for the Internet, the Global Consumer, and Beyond. It was definitely an eye-opener. Paco Underhill went into great detail about how and where we buy. It seems his team spent hours watching customers going around large department stores, looking at this and that, and maybe trying it on, before deciding to buy it.

Unfortunately, we buy less and less in stores and more online. You can't sit at someone's shoulder watching them go through websites and deciding which item is best. That's why Kit Yarrow has made a quantum leap forward in showing what sort of thoughts are going consumer's minds before they click on the fateful "Buy Now" button.

Yarrow interviewed a large number of people, mainly women. Some of the reasons they give for buying something are difficult for me to understand. Her first example is a woman who buys a pair of jeans in a size too small for her. She justifies this action by assessing what she would be able to sell them for, along with other items she has that are not her size.

Being a mere male, and one who is not noticed for his sartorial gait, I find this behavior hard to comprehend, similar to women who meet their friends to shop in the sales. But the most amazing thing I came across was the woman who bought Hermes scarves, decided that they were too expensive, and decided to drop them from her shopping list.

Yarrow points out that all of these consumers can be influenced by actions of the manufacturer. Hermes did this by making a video that the woman saw on their website, and decided that the costs of the manufacturing process were worth the high price. The woman went back to buying a new scarf every six months, and - this is where my jaw dropped - happily paid $275 each time.

My own expenditure on clothes is probably less than $275 a year. Clearly I don't have the income of this woman, nor the need to keep up appearances for work, but I still find that number hard to believe. In fact, I went to the site, and the cost is now over $400. But consumers like this are obviously where the money is.

Yarrow has done an excellent job in decoding the new consumer mind. The book opened my eyes not just to the amount people were waiting to pay, but to the new mindset that governs online selling. Previous books are outdated already, and if you have anything to do with sales you need to read this book.

One of the best marketing books I've read

Marketing psychologist Kit Yarrow explains how technology has rewired our brains, making us more individualistic, isolated, emotional, and distrustful. This is not a pessimistic book, however—it's a practical guide to addressing customers' desires and insecurities in a time of deep cultural shifts. Not only has she done her homework, she presents the results with lightness and clarity. One of the best marketing books I've read.

a fast-food

This book is just a fast-food , many applications with code examples with few explaination . Trying to cover many things with less detailed explination . The author might know many opencv skills and knowledges as a opencv programmer , but he has no intension writing a good book to teach you how to learn opencv from the beginning but just like a programmer throw you with his code sample and saying follow this and you will be fine . It is just a fast-food for opencv examples . Waste of my money .

A, must read book for beginners and enthusiasts.

Excellent introduction to OpenCV and Computer Vision.

The chapters are written in a clear and concise manner. Even though I'm a beginner in Python, I could understand what's going on. I enjoyed reading the sections after code snippets where the author explains what's going on. Some of the really technical topics are explained very nicely, which helps beginners like myself. It was fun to understand how those image transformations actually work. Overall, I would say it was a great experience! You'll need to be familiar with Python if you want to fully appreciate the book. I don't know that much Python, but the code was pretty easy to follow.

Great book to get started on open CV . This is an excellent book for beginners like me. I really liked how the author breaks down each topic to explain it in simple terms. Computer vision algorithm are very mathematical but the author has done a great job of communicating them. I especially liked the chapters on panoramic imaging and seam carving . It feels good to understand the underlying concepts without going through all the equations. The book also provides relevant links wherever required so that we can follow up in more details

Get a second wind

Usually when we start our adventure with Scrum, we focus on what is the most visible and seemingly the easiest to change or introduce: meetings, artifacts, new roles. Very quickly we loose the essence of agility, understanding why we do it.

I recommend this book to anyone that either begins his adventure with Scrum or just... hit the wall. I wish I had read it before. With this book you will understand extremely important foundations of Scrum and answers for all your "whys" based on empirical approach, inspect&adapt and essence of self-organization.

Scrum - A Pocket Guide book really explained in detail and in broader context plenty of information about the basic of scrum - roles, principles, rules and Scrum on the next level. I couldn't be more happier as an experience Agile practitioner myself I have learned a great deal about Scrum on top of what I already knew. The book is very handy and is essential guideline for anyone working as part of a scrum team or coaching others in applying the framework for themselves.

Good addition to lexicon but not exhaustive, 8/10

I read a lot of gawker posts and I've gone out of my way to read old posts, and old news stories ABOUT gawker. This oral history is certainly not a typical "it was the most amazing place ever, we were changing the world!" oral history that many oral histories fall victim too. It's a good companion piece of you already know things about Gawker. It's by no means comprehensive, and doesn't provide the kind of analysis that can come from reading more about them as a website. If you like reading Gawker and want to read some quotes from your favorite writers, I recommend it. If you hate gawker then don't buy it. There really isn't a middle ground.
