About the Author
Gloria Anzaldúa was a Chicana-tejana-lesbian-feminist poet, theorist, and fiction writer from south Texas. She was the editor of the critical anthology MAKING FACE, MAKING SOUL/HACIENDO CARAS: CREATIVE AND CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES BY FEMINISTS OF COLOR (Aunt Lute Books, 1990), co-editor of This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, and winner of the Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award. She taught creative writing, Chicano studies, and feminist studies at University of Texas, San Francisco State University, Vermont College of Norwich University, and University of California Santa Cruz. Anzaldúa passed away in 2004 and was honored around the world for shedding visionary light on the Chicana experience by receiving the National Association for Chicano Studies Scholar Award in 2005. Gloria was also posthumously awarded her doctoral degree in literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. A number of scholarships and book awards, including the Anzaldúa Scholar Activist Award and the Gloria E. Anzaldúa Award for Independent Scholars, are awarded in her name every year.

Powerful read, meaningful read

I studying this book in one of my college classes and I fell in love with it. It's so emotional, intense, and angry. It's visceral and real. I think everyone who wants to better themselves and combat the racism in our society and in themselves should read this book and learn about Anzaldua's life. Any marginalized person is going to connect with something in the text, and anyone of privilege is going to gain some new perspective. Since, in someway, we are all marginalized and privileged it means there is so, so much to learn.

The text itself is also incredibly beautiful and evocative. It is not always a joy to read, no, sometimes it's too painful for that. But it is a powerful read, a meaningful read.

Required reading for everyone interested in race/gender/culture

I cannot recommend this work enough. It is very rare that you come across a book that will shake the very foundations of the way that you see the world. This book has done that for me. It is at once, life affirming, challenging, and encouraging. Read it and soak it in. I had to put it down several times to just let her ideas wash over me. Buy it, read it, and tell your friends about it.

The main goals of this book are, first, to bridge the gap that always exists between basic principles and applied engineering practice, second, to enhance the integration between biological and physical phenomena, and, third, to contribute to the internal development of the field of biotechnology by describing the process-oriented field of bioprocess technology.

How Prescient He Was: Learned Hand, The Paradigmatic Philosopher-Judge

Billings Learned Hand was born in 1872 destined to follow his father and grandfather not just into the law, but to the bench. He majored in Philosophy at Harvard, graduating summa cum laude, he earned the M.A. in Philosophy at Harvard, graduated with honors from Harvard Law School, and then entered the private practice of law. Hand is said to have remarked that he “was not very successful as a young lawyer” and “never was too happy at the bar,” finding much of it “dull,” “petty,” and unduly “formal.” Fortunately, he was rescued from the drudgery of law practice when appointed as a Federal District Court Judge by William Howard Taft – at the ripe old age of 37 – where he served for 15 years until being elevated to the Second Circuit by Calvin Coolidge. He took senior status in 1951, and in 1958 gave the Harvard Law School’s Oliver Wendell Holmes Lectures. He is widely considered to be the greatest jurist never to be appointed to the Supreme Court, and has been quoted more often by legal scholars and the High Court itself more than any other judge never to be so elevated. Learned Hand died in 1961.

It has been said that Hand’s study of philosophy left a permanent residue on his thought generally and his jurisprudence in particular. I find this claim true beyond all reasonable doubt, for the study of philosophy, insofar as one genuinely pursues it, induces an enormous respect for both intellectual humility and an ironic brand of skepticism. It is no coincidence that Hand is claimed to have once described himself as “a conservative among liberals, and a liberal among conservatives” when it came to politics; for him, a devotion to the truth and the rule of law were paramount, meaning that he sacrificed neither to curry favor from any faction or for any gain of public popularity. Hand was, in other words, the paradigmatic philosopher-judge.

Hand’s 1958 Holmes Lectures are three in number. In Lecture I. “When a Court Should Intervene,” Hand presents his view of the implied authority for, and wisdom of, judicial review. During the discussion, however, he makes several other insightful remarks on the limited nature of the law’s generality as applied to future cases; he remarks on the primacy of the text of the law (as the words were publicly understood at the time of enactment) in relation to the problematic nature of ascertaining “legislative intent”); and he expresses deep reservations about the impropriety of the Court going anywhere near political questions.

In Lecture II. “The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments,” Hand confesses that, in his view, judicial review regarding either “due process” is confined to the examination of the abuse of constitutional authority, period. If a legislature enacts a new law, one must assume that it did so in the face of an occasion causing discontent with the status quo and the belief that the law will be beneficial to society. That belief involves a choice involving an appraisal (balancing) of values and sacrifices anticipated as a result of the law. But values and sacrifices are “incommensurables” that, under our American Constitution, it is every American must evaluate or “weigh” on his or her own when making choices. For a Court to step in and “decide” such matters “impartially” is impossible, for those sorts of choices are those that are, as a matter of logic in relation to the incommensurable nature of value, for the people themselves to make; moreover, it by definition impedes upon the people’s sovereignty to think and choose freely, rendering it conceptually impossible as a matter of constitutional law. Any other conclusion renders the Court a third legislative chamber. It is, for Hand, a simple “question of power,” concluding that “I cannot frame any definition that will [accurately predict] when the Court will [improperly] assume the role of a third legislative chamber and when it will [properly] limit [itself] to keeping Congress and the states within their accredited authority.”

In Lecture III., “The Guardians,” Hand considers the First Amendment in relation to the arguments made thus far. He repeats his admonition that expanding the constitutional meanings of the other amendments “beyond their historical meaning” is a violation of the judicial function, which in his view lies in policing legislatures to make sure their value choices are honestly made and perceived sacrifices honestly appraised: “The statute may be far from the best solution of the conflicts with which it deals; but if it is the result of an honest effort to embody that compromise,” the “due process” inquiry ends. (He makes the same point regarding Equal Protection, “between which I [Hand] do not distinguish.”) Hand then criticizes the Court for its continuing usurpation of the people, which he worries will someday be viewed as commonplace. Then Hand reminds us that there are other checks, other safety mechanisms, in place to guard against “public hysteria, panic, greed,” and “sudden swings of popular obsession” made manifest in laws (coming out of the House of Representatives), as the Senate and a Presidential veto. Hand also remarks on the “permanent” nature of Court rulings, the Court’s capacity to do “serious damage” that “cannot be undone.” He then warns of the impending disaster that will become of the judicial appointment process should Americans continue to tolerate the Court’s continued encroachment, as well as the inevitable political “splits” that will become commonplace in all the appellate courts, which will in turn wreck the people’s confidence that what judges are doing is “really” law at all.

Hand concludes by assuring us that he is more than aware of the deeper “ever present problem in all popular government: how far the will of immediate majorities should prevail.” To this he replies that: “Each one of us must in the end choose for himself how far he would like to leave our collective fate to the wayward vagaries of popular assemblies. No one can fail to recognize the perils to which the last forty years have exposed such governments. We are not indeed forced to choose between absolutism and the kind of democracy that so often prevailed in Greek cities during the sixth to fourth centuries before our era. Excellent basic Ultrasound book for ICU. You will still need hands on practice but it will cut your learning time if you read it before hand and then again once you go through a course. Dr. Mayo's course through the ACP is an excellent one.

This is an interesting book written more for enthusiasts than purists. The prose evokes the author's personality vividly. The quirks make it memorable. Of the few chapters in which I have some experience, the information is spot on- illustrating a transcontinental objectivity that is as convincing as the data.

I absolutely loved this textbook

I absolutely loved this textbook. It's really easy to read and kept me interested. I started reading it and finished it before my class even started. It covers so many different areas too. Loved that it talked about overfishing and Tuna, although it could have gone more into depth with it. I would highly recommend it!

This is an excellent book for beginners. I bought it used for a penny! There was a fair amount of writing inside but nothing in pen. Obviously used with creases, but that was expected. Still in good condition with no tears or loose pages. The books content is perfect for grasping necessary concepts of music. I look forward to my children using it.

I got this book when I first joined band. It has simple songs like "Hot Cross Buns" to harder songs like "Ricochet Rock". It also has a list of all of your major scales in the backof the book. I recomend this to new saxophone players

Plein Air Painting

There is no question that Curtis's technical ability is excellent. Many, many photos prove this. I was, however, disappointed in the gray, dullness of many of the paintings. I think this is due to the fact that he starts many of them with grayed paper and washes. I usually take 5 or 6 pages of notes to remember salient points. With this book I took 1/2 page as he kept repeating the same things over and over in a different way. Proving his point with examples of paintings. It is an excellent book for watercolorists as he demos some step-by-step paintings. And as I said his technical skill is par none.

Too much repetition, not enough information on palette and technique

I chose this book because I love his use of palette and brush work, also the English landscape subject matter. I was very disappointed after reading the book how little David divulges of his actual palette and start to finish technique. He repeats the same mantra over and over with very little new insight after the first couple of chapters. It is a beautiful book but not what I expected, I purchased his book "Painting with Impact" at the same time and felt the same about it.

The positive: There are a lot of nice color reproductions of paintings, and a few insights into the workings of a seasoned pro.

The negative: There's a lot of repetition and self-aggrandizement, and very little practical advice.

In the end, it doesn't sum up to much of real use to a painter looking to improve his or her plein air technique. I hate to say it, but it comes out feeling like the main thrust of his advice is, "If you want to succeed at plein air painting, you have to be a good plein air painter, like me."

He tells you that you should get out there and paint outdoors, and that in order to succeed at doing so, you must be quick and confident, and know what you are doing, which comes from lots of experience. He tells you that the main focus of plein air landscape painting is to capture the mood or the feeling of a place, and so you should do that. He gives very few practical clues as to how to go about it, other than to just get out there and do it.

You should look for a good composition, consider the scale and format of what you are going to paint, the tonal and color keys, etc. Don't rush into the painting. But then don't NOT rush into the painting, because time is not on your side. You need to get right in there and make the main statement as quickly as you can. It takes lots of confidence and skill.

That pretty much sums up what advice he does give. Even the step-by-step breakdowns reveal little of his working process, other than the basic order in which he did each painting. The text ends up amounting to essentially, "I get in there and start slapping washes on the paper, dipping my brush into a lot of pre-mixed things, until I have blocked everything in. Then I go back and resolve details."

I gather that the author is a good landscape painter with a lot of experience, that he has reached a point where he works in a very fast, intuitive, and holistic way, and that, upon being asked to explain how he paints, he is at a loss to say much about it. I think that's all perfectly fair, but then why write "how-to" books on the subject?

Both mysteries follow Inspector Barlach as he moves through worlds in which the distinction between crime and justice seems to have vanished. In The Judge and His Hangman, Barlach forgoes the arrest of a murderer in order to manipulate him into killing another, more elusive criminal. And in Suspicion, Barlach pursues a former Nazi doctor by checking into his clinic with the hope of forcing him to reveal himself. The result is two thrillers that bring existential philosophy and the detective genre into dazzling convergence.

"Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921-1990) was best known as the author of clever, morally inquisitive plays such as 'The Visit' and 'The Physicists.' In the early 1950s he also wrote three short, spellbinding mystery novels, which the University of Chicago Press has reissued in paperback with new translations from the German by Joel Agee: The Pledge and The Inspector Barlach Mysteries:The Judge and His Hangman &Suspicion. Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–90) was a prolific Swiss dramatist, novelist, and essayist. His Selected Writings, in three volumes, is also published by the University of Chicago Press. Joel Agee has translated numerous German authors into English.

Five stars for SUSPICION

I came to Friedrich Dürrenmatt through the recommendation of another Amazon reviewer, and had not even heard of him previous to that. These two novellas collected by the University of Chicago Press seemed like accessible starting points, though I think it can be said that the idea that these are 'mysteries' in the same sense as traditional whodunnits is misleading. While they do both adhere to the conventions of the genre, I believe Dürrenmatt is tackling more that just the psychological interplay between detective and criminal. This is, rather, an examination of the moral landscape in the years immediately following World War II.

In THE JUDGE AND HIS HANGMAN, the ailing Inspector Barlach faces an old rival whom he has pursued throughout his career, and who has made it his life's work to thwart the policeman by committing crimes right under Barlach's nose, but which are un-provable (or un-convictable, which amounts to pretty much the same thing). There are shades of Dostoevsky here, with the villain unconcerned with the crime itself, other than as a way to prove he can get away with it, but the story, by the time it twists and turns to the end, rather than a defense of a moral structure, is much more open-ended.

SUSPICION picks up immediately after THE JUDGE, as Barlach is recovering from the life-saving surgery he needed at the end of the previous novella. A chance occurrence sets him on the trail of a suspected SS doctor, now possibly hiding from his war crimes as the operator of a clinic for the aging super-wealthy. Barlach manages to get himself transferred to the clinic, but discovers that his suspicions could not have prepared him for the monstrous reality that he finds.

As far as the term 'mystery' applies, THE JUDGE AND HIS HANGMAN is the more conventional tale. But of the two, I preferred SUSPICION for its ideas. With THE JUDGE, we see an early examination of the intellectual ideas present in such films as DIRTY HARRY, minus the violence and the star power of its actors. It may seem like a crude comparison, but I always thought the real thrust of films like DIRTY HARRY was disguised due to the crowd-pleasing impact of the denouement. Yet the idea of the inviolability of law and the human idea of justice is the heart of both the film and the book. Where Dürrenmatt excels is in his refusal to manipulate the reader - he raises the question and leaves the reader to ponder what his answer might be to the conflict.

Still, the core ideas of THE JUDGE AND HIS HANGMAN are no longer as fresh as they once were, at least to me. Because of this, I felt ambivalent about it. I do think it was worthwhile, especially as a set-up to SUSPICION, which had a much greater impact on me. It is difficult to examine it too closely in this format, as I would prefer to have future readers come to it without any heightened expectation, but I did feel that the final pages, as Barlach faces his nemesis, were profoundly challenging toward old paradigms of faith, belief, and morality. Dürrenmatt provides no answers, though I believe the author set up the conflict as a prod to society to come up with new solutions since the old abstractions were still smoldering on the ash heaps of Europe.

Sometimes books come to the reader at the time when they are best ready to hear the message. As the concepts involved in SUSPICION seemed to round out some other topics that had been fresh in my mind, I found it very powerful. Both novellas have flaws - one reviewer mentions that the translations are weak, and I agree that the prose sounds awkward at times. There is also a deus ex machina in the last story - but the technical details of the text, while not exactly irrelevant, did not obstruct enough to dampen the impact of Dürrenmatt's questions. In SUSPICION, I think those questions are as important today as they were sixty years ago.

Duerrenmatt's work is timeless...

I remember reading "Der Richter und sein Henker" ("The Judge and His Henchman") 20 years ago in German and being very impressed with Friedrich Duerrenmatt's sparse, spare prose and his ability to create suspense and a sense of place with very few strokes. I also remember that Inspector Baerlach (Barlach in this English translation) was no cuddly investigator. Now, as I read this excellent English translation, I realize that the Inspector Barlach character has been used to discuss the larger philosophical and moral quagmire post-war Switzerland found itself in. The themes are universal, but in using a "Krimi" format with a cookie-cutter plot and almost stereotypical characters, Duerrenmatt was able to bring these compelling arguments to the public at large. I continue to find his work alternately entertaining and disturbing. It remains quite a good, brisk read...

Chilling

These stories are perhaps not as good as The Pledge - which is one of the most chilling stories of obsession I've ever read, and I am amazed noone's turned into film, because it seems obvious film material. However, The Judge and his Hangman is similarly obsessive and creepy, but Suspicion doesn't quite work for me. Although the premise of the story - Barlach discovers the identity of a war criminal working in a Swiss hospital and has himself checked into the hospital to confront him - is fine, there are too many deus ex machina moments, and the conclusion seems unlikely. I realise that Durrenmatt is not interested in the police procedural per se, but uses it as a way of expressing ideas about Swiss society and its lack of willingness to face up to uncomfortable truths, but still, if you use that format, then you need to take it to a sensible conclusion for the genre and for me, Suspicion doesn't do that. The Judge and His Hangman is highly recommended and if you haven't read The Pledge, you really should
