Modest update on 3rd edition for a whopping price
By mindcentric
I've bought this book three (3) times, among others, over the past 10 years. Used it as a text for my Interaction classes. It's good. But I'm extremely disappointed in it's "cash cow" status for the publisher. As for this latest edition, the price point is absurdly high considering the modest additions from the 3rd edition.

An excellent introductory book for Interaction Design/HCI students
By Paco Lepe
If you are looking for a book that may give you a general overview of what Interaction Design (HCI and User Experience included) is all about this is the book for you. The book was written in a very easy-to-follow format, and comes with various examples. And in the 4th Edition, the authors made a good effort to update their examples and references with recently published material from international conferences (2014 the latest) such as ACM's CHI and CSCW.

For those who already know the area but are seeking to refresh what they know, this is also a good book. In my case I wanted to find a book that would give me a more comprehensive understanding of what the basics of HCI are. One thing to keep in mind is that the authors' aim was to illustrate in a simple way the kind of projects that may be created by making use of Interaction Design guidelines. And thus, some sections in the book are a bit superficial (i.e. the section on emotions).

NOTE: This book is NOT a manual, so if you are looking for a detailed, do-it-yourself type of textbook this book may not be sufficient.

About the Author

Jerry Mohrig spent his entire professional career as a college teacher. He retired in 2003 from Carleton College as Stark Professor in the Natural Sciences and Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus. Actively involved in science education reform for many years, Jerry was a founding member of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) and of Project Kaleidoscope. From 1997 until 2000 he was Chair of the ACS Committee on Professional Training. During his career Jerry collaborated on chemical research with over 150 undergraduates and published many articles on the stereochemistry of organic addition-elimination and proton-transfer reactions. His first textbook for the organic chemistry laboratory was published in 1968 and over the years he developed several new experiments for the organic lab. His major recent interest is bringing more effective student learning to the organic chemistry lab through the use of guided-inquiry projects and experiments. Jerry has been honored with the CUR Fellow Award, the Briscoe Lectureship at Indiana University, the James Flack Norris Award of the ACS, and the Catalyst Award of the Chemical Manufacturers Association for excellence in the teaching of chemistry.

Gretchen Hofmeister earned her Ph.D. in synthetic chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1990, after receiving a B.A. in chemistry from Carleton College. She was an NIH Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Professor Richard R. Schrock at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before becoming a member of the faculty at Gustavus Adolphus College, earning tenure in 2002. That same year, she moved to Carleton College, where she is now Professor of Chemistry. Professor Hofmeister has taught courses that cover the spectrum from organic to organometallic to inorganic chemistry. Her primary love is teaching organic chemistry, where she emphasizes reactivity and understanding reaction mechanisms. She has designed laboratory experiments at the intermediate and advanced levels that provide students with research-like experiences and expose them to sophisticated and modern synthetic techniques. Her research is focused on developing and understanding catalytic processes in order to improve the selectivity and efficiency of chemical transformations and reduce the adverse impacts of chemistry on the environment. After a sabbatical year (2008/2009) doing research in the laboratories of Karl Anker Jørgensen at Aarhus University in Denmark, she has shifted her focus to catalysts that are composed entirely of organic compounds. Professor Hofmeister has also twice served on the Organic Exams Committee of the American Chemical Society to develop the national standardized exam in organic chemistry.

Christina Hammond, retired, was Lecturer and Coordinator of Laboratory Instruction in the Chemistry Department at Vassar College from 1981 to 2006.  Hammond received a B.S. from the State University of New York at Albany, and came to Vassar in 1961 as a master’s degree student in chemistry and a graduate teaching assistant. She joined the faculty as a laboratory instructor in 1963. Her work concentrated on developing new experiments for these courses, and several of her experiments have been published in the Journal of Chemical Education. She has coauthored six organic chemistry laboratory texts published in the last 10 years.

William Maxwell: Early Novels and Stories, by William Maxwell

Christopher Carduff, editor In 1934, at age 26, William Maxwell left small-town Illinois for New York City, convinced that life and literature were elsewhere. "I had no idea then," he later wrote, "that three-quarters of the material I would need for the rest of my writing life was already at my disposal. My father and mother. My brothers. The look of things. The Natural History of home . . . All there, waiting for me to learn my trade and recognize instinctively what would make a story." With his second book, "They Came Like Swallows" (1937), Maxwell found his signature subject matter-the fragility of human happiness-as well as his voice, a quiet, cadenced Midwestern voice that John Updike has called one of the wisest and kindest in American ?ction. Set against the background of the Spanish ?u epidemic of 1918, this short novel presents the loving character of Elizabeth Morison, a devoted wife and mother, through the eyes of those whom she is fated to leave decades before her time. Edmund Wilson described "The Folded Leaf" (1945) as "a quite unconventional study of adolescent relationships-between two boys, with a girl in the of?ng-in Chicago and in a Middle Western college: very much lived and very much seen." He praised this "drama of the immature" for the compassion Maxwell brings to his male protagonists, whose intensely felt, unarticulated bond is beyond their inchoate ability to understand. "Time Will Darken It" (1948) is a drama of the mature: a good man's struggle to keep duty before desire and his family's needs before his own. It paints a portrait of Draperville, Illinois, in 1912, a proud and isolated community governed by gossip, where an ambitious young woman must not overreach the limits society has placed on her sex, and an older, married gentleman must not encourage her should she dare. Together with these major works, this Library of America edition of Maxwell's early ?ction collects his lighthearted ?rst novel, "Bright Center of Heaven" (1934), out of print for nearly 70 years, and nine masterly short stories. It concludes with "The Writer as Illusionist" (1955), Maxwell's fullest statement on the art of ?ction as he practiced it.

"I went back and reread the novels I had read before, together with "Time Will Darken It" and all the short stories I could find. And I thought: So this is how it should be done. I thought: If only I could go back and write again every single thing I have written." -Alice Munro

CHRISTOPHER CARDUFF, editor, is a consulting editor at The Library of America. His collected edition of William Maxwell's Þction, published to mark the writer's centenary, will be completed by a second volume, Later Novels and Stories, in fall 2008.

A well-kept secret
By christopher wyecross
When someone asks me who or what I'm reading these days my response is usually William Maxwell. The next question is "Who?" I then go on to tell them about a writer who has entered my life like a whirlwind, and I tell them about this author. Perhaps I am the one who has not caught up with 20th century fiction and yet I have read a plethora of writers in that era. My only excuse is that Maxwell lived from 1908 to 2000 and during his life time his actual fictional output was six novels (one of them a short one) and a number of short stories. What then was he doing in the meantime? Well, he was an editor of the New Yorker Magazine for one thing. Enough said there.

He wrote when he could but you will often find stretches of nine or ten years between new novels. This does not help an eager fan base, but that's the way it was. I could go on for pages about this man, but I will just say this: if you like action- packed stories then he is not the author for you. But if you want a story where the characters grow and grow and grow upon you as if they were living right in your home, then give him a try. But be patient, for his complete delineation of character is not found until the end (and even then there is so much to be reconsidered and reread). Here's hoping.

One of Our Great Writers, Collected
By E. Gilbert
The first book of Maxwell's I read, in my late teens, was "So Long, See You Tomorrow" [in the second volume of this series,, "Later Novels"]. It was so great, so moving, that I couldn't imagine at that time ever reading anything else by this author. Fortunately I went exploring eventually. "The Folded Leaf" and "Time Will Darken It" [in this volume] should be on any reader's shelf or in their mind. I recommend this volume of Maxwell's early novels and stories as well as the second volume of his later works. Money well spent on an American writer whose work will genuinely enrich your life.

A valued and very strongly recommended addition
By Midwest Book Review
The late William Maxwell (1908-2000) served for forty years as an editor at 'The New Yorker' magazine. An Illinois-boarn realist whose literary works provided his readers with 'windows' into small-town midwestern family life of the 1910 and 1920s, Maxwell's own mastery of American prose style was (and remains) unsurpassed by any of his contemporary including Eudora Welty, J. D. Slainger, John Updike, and Alice Munro (all of whom he was a first reader of their fiction in his professional capacity with 'The New Yorker'). Now his four early novels (Bright Centory of Heaven; They Came Like Swallows; The Folded Leaf; and Time Will Darken It) have been collected under one cover, along with nine of his early short stories, and his essay 'The Writer as Illusionist' which he wrote in 1955. "William Maxwell: Early Novels And Stories" is a valued and very strongly recommended addition to community, college, and university American Literature reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Sound and Music for the Theatre: The Art & Technique of Design, by Deena Kaye, James LeBrecht

For every phase of theatrical production, Sound and Music for the Theatre traces the entire process of sound design from initial concept through closing night. The book discusses the early evolution of a sound design that supports the play, from researching sources for music and effects to negotiating a contract. It shows how to organize the construction of the sound design elements, how the designer functions in a rehearsal, and how to set up and train an operator to run sound equipment for a theatrical production. This instructive information is interspersed with "war stories” describing real-life problems with solutions that sound designers and composers can apply in their own work.

The new third edition still retains its focus on aesthetics, techniques, and process. However, it goes beyond to offer a brand new forum on sound reinforcement, unique information on computer-assisted playback systems, and a comprehensive perspective on using technology to build and execute shows.

Review
An excellent book! A great breakdown of the art of sound design and how it fits in today's theatre.
--William Liotta, Tulane University

I have used the first edition of this book for years and I am very happy with the new edition.
--Michael Oncle, University of Memphis

Every phase of the production process is covered in detail, along with a host of anecdotal examples from the personal experiences of the authors. In all, it's ideal reading for those involved in the creative aspect of theatre sound rather than the practical operation.
--Lighting and Sound Magazine

This is currently (and has been since 1992) THE key text for students and practitioners in sound design for performance
--Scott Palmer, Leeds University UK

Every Phase of the production process is covered in detail, along with a host of anecdotal examples from the personal experiences of the authors.

A good general text for design, rather than application.
