Review
"It is hard to find a textbook that gives a better basis for the understanding of Human metabolism and nutrition, that is so well designed and actually quite fun to read as this one. This book is my first choice for a textbook for my medical students and for nursing school too. It is well suited for any kind of studies of metabolism at a higher level because of its ease at explaining the basics and the frameworks needed for the understanding of metabolism. It is the first book I give to my doctorial students when they need to freshen up their knowledge and the basics in metabolism when starting research in clinical nutrition and metabolism...if anyone is looking for the most interesting and fun book to read as an in depth introduction to human metabolism and nutrition, this is it!" Very sleek presentation of topic area; accessible for non-specialist
By J. Douglas Tygar
I can warmly recommend this book as a highly accessible textbook on some of the most interesting topics in biochemistry. The book is largely self-contained, and thus is surprisingly accessible to a wide variety of readers, even those with very limited exposure to biochemistry.

Since Prof. Frayn keeps his focus keenly on human examples, the entirety of the book is relevant to readers. Frayn's book is relatively brief (for a science textbook), and thus does not have the encyclopedic feel of a typical undergraduate biochemistry textbook. What a non-specialist reader does get from this book is a solid understanding of metabolic processes and tremendous insight into his or her own body.

I would like to call out several features of this book that I found especially nice: Prof. Frayn's holistic approach combines topics from anatomy, medicine, biology, biochemistry, and nutrition in a single integrated presentation, allowing the reader to make connections that otherwise might be difficult. As I mentioned previously, the text is largely self-contained (and he has cross-references throughout the book, making it easy to follow), so it can be read by a wide audience (I would recommend that a reader have a basic understanding of chemistry at the high school level before reading this book.) Prof. Frayn also puts much of the material in a variety of tables, diagrams, and boxes, which helps present the material in convenient "chunks."

The relatively short length of the book (the text is about 350 pages, with the references, index, and front material making up the balance of the page count) allows the author to concentrate his attention on the "good stuff" (particularly interesting topics in metabolic studies) and still keep the pace of the book flowing. Finally, Prof. Frayn is an excellent writer, and his prose is fun to read, without being cloying.

I can recommend this book to the lay person who is prepared to make an effort to follow a textbook-level presentation of this material.

Fantastic resource and very readable

This book makes nutritional biochemistry as readable as a novel; I love the way this author makes technical details come alive. This book also makes a great gift for persons interested in metabolism.

Excellent
By imre veres
I have probably more than 60 textbooks on Advanced Nutrition, Sports Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition, published in last 5 years, from s.Gropper through Krauses to A. Catharine Ross... But in this book found some details what is in no other. For nutritionist(or in USA maybe dietetian), high level fitness experts, and nonspeciallist doctors I recommend it highly. Book is readable, but also filled with some interesting data, diagrams, tables and explanation. This book is of course not for someone who has not good knowledge about nutrition, but very useful addition to that subject for understanding it deeper. Really sorry that Mr Frayn not have writen another book, like his presentation style so much.

The Dragon Can't Dance, by Earl Lovelace

A story of shanty-town life in Trinidad. Calvary Hill is the home of Aldrick Prospect, who lives for the carnival and his once-a-year chance to play dragon. Here too live Miss Cleothilda, the ageing carnival queen, Philo the Calypsonian, and Fisheye, who flaunts his strength in the steel bands.

From Publishers Weekly
The lilting, metallic harmonies of steel drums and the musical rhythm of Trinidadian Creole patois are elegantly rendered by consummate Caribbean man-of-letters Lovelace (Salt) in this novel, published in England in 1979. As always, Lovelace is concerned with how West Indian men and women struggle to find their individual identities in the face of dehumanizing living conditions, and how they resist cultural assimilation. For two days a year, the festival-parade of Carnival allows struggling Trinidadians to forget their poverty and embrace the frenzy and glory that masquerade provides. For the hilltop shack communities that dot the outskirts of Port-of-Spain, Carnival takes on mythic proportions. The respect that hustler Aldrick gains for his portrayal of an intricately scaled dragon carries him through the year. But the old order is fading: aging Carnival queen Cleothilde is forced to give way to beautiful, free-spirited Sylvia; drummer Fisheye fights to preserve his pride; and corporate sponsors rush to profit from Carnival and do away with its old customs of warriorhood between rival bands in favor of a more tourist-friendly version of the festivities. Conflicts arise when whose who resist control by the corporations alienate neighbors by challenging the inevitable commercialization of Carnival. Kaleidoscopically colorful characters and a faithful ear help make this quest for personhood one of Lovelace's best works.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Distinguished Trinidadian novelist Lovelace writes fiction as syncopated, sinuous, and irresistible as the calypso music that punctuates the lives of his poor but proud characters. Here, as he did in the award-winning Salt , Lovelace peers beneath the rigid structure of island society into the desiring hearts of men and women struggling for recognition, respect, and love. Carnival season has just begun in Calvary Hill, a Port of Spain shantytown, and Miss Cleothilda, the carnival queen, and Aldrick, the dragon king, try to concentrate on creating their elaborate costumes, but both are distracted by a young beauty named Sylvia. The queen senses a rival, and Aldrick, famous for his avoidance of work and marriage, feels love coming on. Conflict also drives Fisheye, a warrior without a cause whose restlessness infects his fellow drummers to the point that their steel bands become veritable street gangs, and Pariag, the only Indian on the Hill and the most ambitious and innocent of the lot. As Lovelace masterfully choreographs the dance of each of his finely drawn characters, he reveals the conundrums not only of Caribbean life but of the human condition itself. Donna Seaman

From Kirkus Reviews
Caribbean writer Lovelace, whose Salt won the 1997 Commonwealth Writer's Prize, returns with a story (first published in England in 1979) that offers a defining and luminously sensitive portrait of postcolonial island life. The island in question is recently independent Trinidad, but it could be any Caribbean island settled by European planters, African slaves, and indentured East Indians. Carnival time is at hand, and the inhabitants of the Hill, former slaves, who ``survive here, holding their poverty as a possession,'' are getting ready for this Mardi Graslike celebration: Steel bands are practicing, calypso singers and writers--like the diffident Philo--are creating new songs, and Aldrick Prospect, as usual, is working on his dragon costume. Aldrick, who, like most of the men, is unemployed, comes alive at Carnival, where it's his mission to do the Dragon dance, a dance that expresses all the people's frustrations and memories of their warrior past, and affirms their power--power that, if provoked, could burn down the city. But this year Aldrick, who's spurned the advances of young Sylvia, finds himself brooding. Change is in the air--those steel bands are acquiring commercial sponsors, the old fighting spirit of the people is changing to passive acceptance, and Aldrick's friends are drifting away and making new lives. After Carnival, Aldrick, feeling like ``the last symbol of rebellion,'' continues to brood, especially when he sees Sylvia take up with Guy, a notorious womanizer. He befriends Fisheye, an angry radical, and joins a futile rebellion against the government. Aldrick is jailed but, unlike the others, doesn't accept defeat, and once released--still depressed--he returns to the Hill. Finally, a quiet epiphany and a promise of Sylvia's affection present him with hope and reason enough to give up the impotent protest of the Dragon's dance. A poignant, beautifully crafted tale about a man and his country on the cusp of change. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A prescient novel of protest and community
By Suyo
Earl Lovelace's The Dragon Can't Dance, set in Trinidad, positions the complex ritual of Carnival in a socio-political context. Unpacking Carnival is synonymous with examining the Caribbean self, as Aldrick journeys from an anonymous masquerade dragon to an authentic self.

Lovelace explores characters from various backgrounds, exploring the transformation each undergoes as consumerism and corporate influence creep into Carnival. From the 'bad John,' Fisheye, to the rising calypso star Philo, each character is transformed and contributes to the transformation of Aldrick.

At the novel's center is the romance between Aldrick and Sylvia. Across the years and Carnivals, the two do a dance of self-discovery which is not overblown or over dramatic. Their love story is, instead, understated and believable, and represents a solid foundation to a novel with perfect prose and pacing.

A Spellbinding and Magnificent Piece of Art
By Roger Deblanck
Earl Lovelace's novel leaves me spellbound and overwhelmed with how possibly to express the brilliance and beauty of the book. This is a magnificent and extraordinary piece of art with the hypnotic lyricism of its prose, the intricacy of its story, and the depth to which Lovelace investigates the struggles of an entire community. Only the great Naguib Mahfouz comes to mind as having a similar ability as Lovelace in probing the psychological and emotional depths of his characters.

The story takes places in the poverty-stricken shantytown of Cavalry Hill in Trinidad. The plot focuses around the festival of Carnival each year. In this impoverished setting and on the transcendent occasion of the yearly Carnival celebration, Lovelace guides us into the lives of a range of characters that burst off the page in all their pain and joy, their failures and triumphs, their shame and redemption. We meet Cleothilda, the hostile shop owner; Sylvia, the gorgeous maiden; Fisheye, the wayward combatant; Philo, the calypsonian dreamer; Pariag, the minority outcast; and Aldrick, the dragon masquerader. Each of them carries a lifelong weight of both wounds and dreams.

In particular, Aldrick is the focal figure. He is the one who most symbolically undergoes a spiritual transformation each year when he dons his dragon costume. When he becomes the dragon, he asserts both his humanity and his dangerousness while also reminding himself of his past and his need to survive. Everyone attempts to escape their harsh reality by entering the realm of their masquerade during Carnival. The festival temporarily transports them into their dreams and out of the dismal situation of their lives. They are each striving to reach a feeling of hope. After the yearly gala ends, however, problems arise when they must return to their daily hardships. Lovelace charts these phases and transitions with great compassion and empathy. He scrutinizes the dynamics of power, race, and class distinctions. He traces the emotions, motives, and instincts that drive his characters to survive, and he also examines what pushes them beyond their threshold of tolerance and patience to a condition where they snap.

The Dragon Can't Dance is the type of unforgettable narrative that stays with you and percolates your thoughts. It affirms the power of literature to explore the essence of truth and to address the meaning of humanity. Lovelace is a master at showing us how within a destitute community, the yearning to live, grow, and have hope is no different for people anywhere in the world, regardless of their station in life.

A charming third installment.
By Kriti Godey
The Wedding Wallah by Farahad Zama is the third book of a series (starting with The Marriage Bureau for Rich People) set in my hometown, Vizag. No one ever writes books set in Vizag, so this fact alone almost guarantees that I'd love these books. However, they're also actually pretty well-written, have great characters, and more importantly, they have a lot of heart. They remind me a lot of the The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith - slow and somewhat sleepy, but not boring.

Anyway, enough about the series. The Wedding Wallah sees all of our favourite characters return: Mr. and Mrs. Ali's marriage bureau is still doing brisk business, Rehman has still not been cured of his idealism, Pari is still determined to be an independent young woman and Aruna is fully settled into her marriage, although she still helps out at the marriage bureau. We are introduced to a new character, Dilawar, who is from a wealthy and aristocratic family, but hasn't found a bride yet. His family, for whatever reason, believes that the relatively poor Pari would be a good bride for him, despite her widowed status and adopted son. Meanwhile the Naxalites (terrorists with communist ideologies) are growing increasingly active in the villages surrounding Vizag. Intertwined with these are a few stories from the marriage bureau side of things. And of course, people are falling in love all over the place.

The book is as charming as previous installments, and it left me wanting more, immediately. I'm not sure how much this has to do with my excitement whenever a place I know is mentioned (which happens a lot.) I was especially excited when the bookstore that I bought the book from was mentioned as a place that one of the characters bought books from!

I thought the Naxalite plot was a little too dramatic in comparison with the rest of the book; it was a little jarring. However, it still made sense. I think that these book really do capture Vizag very well. The only flaw that I can find is that the people sometimes seem too idealistic. This book is also slightly more racy than the other books, which was fine, but a tiny bit unexpected. I was also glad that the book addressed a few modern issues - the Naxalites are portrayed fairly, showing both the bad and the good, and I thought that the inclusion of gay rights in India was also a nice touch and a nice nod to the recent decriminalisation of homosexuality.

I'm just frustrated that I don't live in the UK, since that's the only way I can pre-order the next book on Amazon!

The Marriage Bureau adventures continue. . .
By BC
"The Wedding Wallah" was a lovely book that builds on the previous two installments in the series. Mr Zama has a talent for writing simply and clearly about India and its people and customs and the pressing social issues of the day. Over the course of the series, I have fallen in love with the Ali family, Aruna and her family and Pari and her adopted son Vasu. In this book, we are introduced to Dilawar, an old friend of Rehman, and a potential bridegroom for Pari. Dilawar is in love with a young man though and afraid to expose himself to condemnation from the society that he lives in. He is a wonderful addition to the storyline and I hope he will be a regular in the series. Along with the tales of Indian matchmaking, Mr. Zama returns to the country to examine the struggle between the poor farmers and big agricultural interests and then introduces us to a group of guerrillas that believe in kidnapping and causing mayhem in order to bring attention to their cause. It is here that I found that the transition from the business of love to the business of guerrilla warfare a bit jarring. The series until now was also quite innocent and left quite a bit to the imagination, however with the addition of the guerrillas, Aruna is placed into two different situations which (if this were a movie) would change the rating from "G" to "PG" or maybe "R". In some ways, "The Wedding Wallah" is like two different books. One of the books moves along slowly and sweetly and the other is just a bit too hectic. I did enjoy the resolution though and felt that the book went back on track once the guerilla story was resolved. In conclusion, it's a great book, just a little convoluted in parts. I'm hoping for another book in the series very soon and *I wish that Mrs. Ali would continue her writing exercises--they are delightful and informative.*

Everyday life in India
By Damaskcat
Mr Ali's marriage bureau is flourishing. His assistant, Aruna is about to take a break with her husband Ram and Pari - a cousin of Mr Ali's is going to take over from her for a time because she has lost her own job in a call centre. Pari lives opposite Mr and Mrs Ali and has an adopted son. She has received a proposal of marriage from a wealthy man which she is considering. As a widow she can choose her own marriage partner.

As other reviewers have mentioned this third book in the series covers much darker themes - the activities of a group of terrorists, the Naxilites, and the lack of acceptance of homosexuality in India. There are still many amusing incidents and a focus on the good aspects of human nature. Women look after sick relatives and put the family's interests before their own. Maybe some people seem too selfless to our Western eyes but it is not that long since women in the West would have been expected to exhibit the same behaviour.

I liked the way Mrs Ali is still working behind the scenes when she considers it necessary to influence the way things are going. People who read the first book in the series The Marriage Bureau for Rich People will recall the way she presented Aruna to Mr Ali as a suitable assistant. I also liked the insight this series gives into life in India today. People have mobile phones and computers but many aspects of their lives might seem primitive to Western eyes. Mrs Ali drying tamarinds and tomatoes in the sun seems odd to us as well as unhygienic. But there is something warm and friendly about the society these books portray and I always think that I can smell, hear and see everyday life when I read these books.

Beware - Not the Melody Lines
By Christopher Mark Newton
I was looking for hymn melodies for Bb instruments. This book is NOT it. Although it does not say so, this book is for accompaniment, and not solo melody lines.

Brilliant overview of the impossibly endless learning you can delve into in Ableton 9! Mr. Perrine definitely knows his way around the kitchen and what spices to use while still writing a more user friendly, understandable approach to learning your way around Ableton. I only wish he would update it for the new features that came with 9.5 suite. But, then again, no one could have seen those awesome features coming! Cheers, Mr. Perrine! My only regret is that I bought the book online and missed out on the extra disc!

From Publishers Weekly
Hansen (Confessions of an Enron Executive with Lynn Brewer) makes his fiction debut with a predictable thriller about the legendary North American ape-man Bigfoot. After a fire set by humans claims the lives of a male Bigfoot's family, the creature goes on a rampage of revenge, killing and devouring countless victims in the Pacific Northwest. The authorities first get a sense that something unusual is transpiring when several people disappear, and large, mysterious tracks are found in the vicinity. Three men with different agendas track the beast: Ty Greenwood, a former software mogul shunned after he earlier reported sighting a Bigfoot; Chief Ben Eagleclaw, a Native American actor with a spiritual connection to the creature; and sheriff's detective Mac Schneider, who first finds concrete physical traces of the rampaging animal. Light on science and full of gruesome violence, this isn't in the same league as Jurassic Park, Jaws or Philip Kerr's Esau, an intelligent speculation concerning Bigfoot's Asian cousin, the Abominable Snowman. From Booklist
You're forgiven if you think this novel is a spoof. Clearly designed to evoke Jaws-type responses, Hansen's tale of Bigfoot on the rampage features blood, gore, plucky heroes, hapless victims, and a great deal of silliness. First-time novelist Hansen believes in the existence of Bigfoot (although evidently, from his afterword, he does not know that the famous 1967 Patterson Bigfoot footage has been exposed as a hoax), and he really wants us to take the book seriously. Many scenes are well written, but overall the book is more reminiscent of Claws, a murderous-bear movie made a couple of years after Jaws: it has all the same basic ingredients, and it tries to be scary, but you can't really take it seriously. Although a failure as a serious thriller, the book is a rousing success as a campy, brainless, unintentionally humorous blend of adventure and horror--just the sort of thing that kids of an earlier era used to enjoy at the Saturday matinee. Murderous Squatch Story
By YB
Shadow Killer is an unusual story in the sasquatch genre. Shadow Killer's characters include a strong deputy sherrif, a stereotypicaly beautiful blond and ambitious to a fault TV reporter, a psychic Native American TV Indian Chief who mentally communicates with the antagonist, a mega rich software mover and shaker turned US Forest Service worker and part-time bigfooter, numerous pitifully weak victims, and a murderously angry, incredibly intelligent and twisted rogue sasquatch. This sasquatch antagonnist is not your typical dumb ape, or animal, or even a chimp-like intelligent hominid. No, this big guy is very different: intelligent, thoughtful, capable of planning and calculating attacks, probing and psychic to boot. Another feature that sets Shadow Killer apart from other books is that the author jump starts the story with the cause for the sasquatche's murderous rampage through Western Washington in the beginning pages of the book. The pace of the story is relentless with fairly good character development.

I liked the pace and constant action as well as the peek into the sasquatch's emotions and thought processes, which is different from most sasquatch books. I also liked that the big guy is not one of those "nice" sasquatches but has gone rogue. This sasquatch is dismissive of the "little legs" as weak, cowardly yet tasty meat as it is the biggest and baddest creature in the forest.

What I didn't like was the crude demise of the stereotypical blond, ambitious-to-a-fault TV reporter, who in this story tried to sleep and manipulate her way to the top, but met an ironic, degrading demise at the hands of the sex-crazed sasquatch, a new twist for a sasquatch story for sure. Before she died, she wished all too late that she should have been a better person--a demeaning revelation which did not add to the story at all.

Shadow Killer is an adult sasquatch thriller. Some potential readers will not like all of the plot's twists and turns, although they have been cleverly worked out. This is not your typical story of a camper or hiker who has had a traumatic sasquatch encounter, and ever after they're obsessed with proving the existence of sasquatch. This is a fight to the death between an enormous antagonist who is on a personal rampage through Western Washington for revenge and a coterie of characters who are like a Noah's Arc of the sasquatch genre--there's something for almost every squatcher here.

The Shadow Killer
By Deeann Davis
Well, I liked this book. Yes, the subject matter is a bit silly: a 1400 pound, 11 foot sasquatch (with an intelligent, but limited, mind) running all over the place killing people for revenge. Kinda goofy, I agree. But the author wove a pretty good story and developed the characters pretty well. There were lots of characters in the book to keep up with but they all came together to make the story flow. I was really disappointed in one character, Ben. He's an old Indian who has the ability to "communicate" with the creature mentally. He could have added much to the story if this telepathy concept had been fully developed. But sadly, it wasn't. That was disappointing. But the rest of the book was okay. The dust cover says it will make you think twice before going camping again. Hardly.

I think this is Matthew Scott Hansens first novel. He certainly has potential. He wove a good story.

A Hardcover and a Keeper
By Ronald A. Martin
I was fortunate to find this one in Hardcover for a dollar. With that being said, I definitely got my money's worth. I was actually pretty surprised I found it interesting. I am not a big believer in Bigfoot, but I found the story and characters interesting. I found "Dark Woods" to be a bit better but I think both are excellent reads in their own right.

Are We Not Men?: Masculine Anxiety and the Problem of African American Identity, by Phillip Brian Harper

In 1995, popular anxieties about black masculinity became evident in public reactions to the conclusion of the OJ Simpson trial and the Million Man March on Washington. The nation's divided response to the OJ verdict, together with the controversy surrounding Louis Farrakhan's call to black men to come together for a "day of atonement" brought issues of race and gender to the forefront of national debate.
In his timely and incisive book Are We Not Men?, Phillip Brian Harper explores issues of race and representation and shows that ideas about black masculinity have always played a troubled role both in the formation of African-American identity and in the mass media at large. What is at stake when a picture of OJ Simpson is darkened on the cover of Time magazine? Why is AIDS still seen as a white gay disease when a quarter of deaths from AIDS from 1981-1991 were among black males? Using examples from a variety of cultural contexts, ranging from sports and pop music to literature and television, Harper investigates these questions in an effort to show the ways in which narrow definitions of black manhood have failed to acknowledge real differences within the African-American community--to grave social and political effect. He examines recent phenomena, such as reactions to ABC anchorman Max Robinson's AIDS-related death and Magic Johnson's HIV status, as well as the homophobia and chauvinism of the Black Arts movement of the '60s and '70s, the construction of black "crossover" identity from Motown and Diana Ross to Run-DMC and MTV and the way that "street" authenticity is incorporated into Michael Jackson's choreography. He unravels the gender politics behind the "passing" novels of the Harlem Renaissance, scrutinizes black masculinity as seen through the eyes of the white protagonist of the 1961 autobiographical narrative Black Like Me and explores early representations of African Americans on television shows like "Julia" and "Room 222." Upholding the recent success of drag performer RuPaul, who demonstrates the limits of traditional notions of black masculinity by openly defying them, Harper suggests that popular culture is able to transcend its own representations and points to a future in which "black male" is no longer a homogenizing term.
An original, far-reaching and ultimately humane work of cultural criticism, Harper's book argues convincingly that there are no innocent texts, and forces us to reexamine the culture that surrounds us. Are We Not Men? will find a wide audience among those interested in American and African-American cultural studies, gender studies and gay/lesbian studies.

Review

"...a thoughtful and provocative meditation on the complex status of the African-American male in American society. This book is essential reading for those seeking to understand how race and gender can be bound together into an oppressive set of stereotypes."--Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

"Are We Not Men? is an important and sophisticated examination of black masculinity. Harper deftly demonstrates the heretofore rarely explored contradictions in vastly diverse representations of black manhood in American popular culture."--Tricia Rose, author of Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America

"This book rises head and shoulders above all the publications on the trendy subject of black masculinity. Phillip Brian Harper writes courageously and without rancor about the common homophobic ground in black high- and low-brow culture, and the common structure of discrimination in white 'serious museum' as well as popular culture."--Manthia Diawara, Professor of Comparative Literature and Film, Director, Africana Studies, NYU

"Phillip Brian Harper has an elegant sense of irony, a keen eye for contradiction, and a serious message to convey. These essays on masculinity, race, and homophobia are meticulous, witty, thoughtful, sobering, and absorbing. This is cultural criticism at its best."--Patricia J. Williams, Columbia University Law School
