Clear writing makes a good case for actual help with the future pollution

This book, written by a Japanese ecology specialist and an American who has studied marine ecology
both in Tokyo and in America is one of the most readable cases put forth for what we can actually do to
assist in the transformation of the world so we can all continue to live in it and our children and granchildren
can continue to thrive. I read it in amazement. There is lots of it which is very technical and I must admit
I skipped that, but the summarizations and the precis of contents which appear before all the technical
data are coherent, believable, and practical. I keep this book in my teaching studio so that all can skim it
and get some idea of how we can move forward from the over use of all the resources of our world.

a convincing case for sustainability

Like a Japanese Ben Franklin, Professor Komiyama is an astute observer, who makes clear in concrete examples how human civilization has evolved to a point where we are changing the living conditions on our planet. And like Franklin, he offers solutions- detailed, concrete solutions covering everything from engineering to ecology to economics. Vision 2050 makes the case for why we must change our patterns of consuming energy and natural resources, but offers realistic hope that with better technology and informed policy, we can restore the balance on our planet and achieve a good standard of living for peoples in all countries.

When Vision 2050 was being translated, I was asked for some editorial suggestions; however, I was not paid for this service and have no economic interest in the book.

I loved the story line, but the grammatical errors and typos drove me crazy. I have read two more of her books and find the same thing going on. Lots of inserting he when it should be her, etc. She needs to get a new proofer.

Sweet and engaging with ensemble cast

This is a three in oner. A novella length story that manages to introduce quite a broad range of characters and surprisingly the ensemble cast are painted with quite a detailed brush. A real gift, but one Kate Hewitt excels in. Our primary heroine is Lynne, a recently widowed New Yorker, she has come to the point where she wants something more, something new. At first she thinks it might be returning to her birthplace of Scotland to set up a Hotel with her childhood friend Jess and her fiancé. Only Jess's plans fall through and another option opens up for the old friends in Vermont.

Lynne's daughter Molly is also going through a transitional stage in her life. She is beginning her teaching career at a tough inner city school in New York. There she meets the cynical Luke who guides her through her first weeks and makes her wonder if her long term boyfriend Jason is the right man for her after all.

Meanwhile in Vermont. Lynne and Jess find themselves becoming part of the community and making new friends and even perhaps new loves. But they first have to come to terms with the past.

This is a sweet and engaging read full of interesting and likeable characters. We see the ups and downs as the characters brave their new world and make decisions about the future.

Not quite up to novel standards.

Not sure about this book. Story line was good but I had some trouble reading it. Had to go back and re-read several times as I didn't realize the subjected changed. There were no breaks between story lines so you were never quite sure where you were. One subject ran into another in the very next paragraph. Most novels have break lines between subjects or places being written about . Probably wouldn't recommend to reading enthusiasts who would expect more from a novel.

Ann Atkins' biography of Golda Meir is the second of her books I have reviewed. The first was a biography of Eleanor Roosevelt. I gave it high marks. It pales by comparison to this book which is as accessible and as easy to read.
Ann did a great job in the previous book of relating the struggles Eleanor faced with current issues. In this book, Ann's touch is more subtle and therefore more powerful.

A must for all 20th century world history classes

As a retired . global studies teacher I found this book incredibly informative and fascinating. The author has shown the reader what an inspiring woman Golda Meir was and the journey her life took to finally achieve the dream that the Jewish people had for centuries -to form their own homeland in ancient Palestine. In a world where we are desperately looking for role models for young people this book is a beautiful example of the difference one person can make. I highly recommend this book for for anyone interested in 20th century history and as a required reading for the classroom-Kathy Bosseler

Reading at it's Best

Golda Meir ~True Grit is a brilliantly written story of an enormously unconventional woman. I would say," most,if not all,people in America would have a better understanding of current world affairs if they read this book".
It is graphic in places but calls a spade a spade. Reading this book could be a life changing experience for many.
I highly recommend this book for great reading.

Interesting and different, to say the least

Batchen's book is full of information and introduced me to several potential inventors of photography of whom I was unaware from reading the standard monographs in the field (e.g., Eder, Gernsheim and Gernsheim). This, however, is probably the least important of the book's many themes delivered on so many fronts. The idea that people somehow had to be ready for photography is thought provoking and different, but I still think greater weight should be placed on the conceptual leaps that had to be overcome. It is true that the optics for photography existed as early as 1685; it is equally true that the chemistry or photography was fully developed around 1775-1780. True, people were not rich enough to afford photographs and thus make the medium into a popular success, but there remains the lingering question of putting the chemistry and optics together, and if the book has a flaw, it is that Batchen gives this short shrift - but this material is available in abundance elsewhere. On the whole, for the interested (and already fairly well informed) layperson and specialist in the history of photography, this is excellent, eye opening and, yes, even mind bending reading. Someone wiser (and much funnier) than I said that he disliked arguments because they are always vulgar and often convincing - and much of what Batchen says is convincing. Even if I ultimately disagree with a lot of Batchen's conclusions, at least he has introduced me to some alternatives I did not think of on my own. Beyond this, questions arise regarding the nature of technology, innovation and invention. Ultimately, what is the purpose of technology? What prompts invention? What leads one to make the conceptual leap that links optics with chemistry and yields something as earth shaking as photography? Batchen's book seems as good a place as any when approaching questions such as these, at least on a serious, scholarly level.
